Dental Health Insurance Plan Overview

It would be lovely if regular Health Insurance covered dental problems as well. However, most plans merely cover a small number of annual visits a year to the dentist for regular cleaning and preventive work. So why are teeth given such shabby treatement by regular Insurance plans? Why do we need a separate Dental Health Insurance Plan?

The reason is, that teeth are at a greater risk of developing pathological conditions than the rest of the body. More than any other body part, our teeth require active and regular care by brushing and flossing. They also require passive care by avoiding too many sweets if you're prone to cavities. Due to these factors, they are placed in a different risk profile from the rest of the body.

In addition, the costs of treating tooth related problems greatly outstrips the costs of treating other parts of the body. For example, a simple Root Canal Operation with a crown place afterwards could easily cost upto $2,000! And root canals are one of the most frequent tooth operations that are performed. We may not like that Dental Insurance is not included in Regular health plans (Unlike some other countries), but we can't do anything about it other than get a supplemental Dental Health Insurance Plan.

Cost of Dental Health Insurance

Dental Health Insurance costs cover two aspects. Monthly premiums and how much you have to pay out of pocket for Dental Treatments. One extremely important factor determining the cost of your dental coverage is which treatments are eligible. Astounding as it may sound, there are several dental plans that do not include major dental operations like braces. The reason is that Orthodontic care is even more expensive than regular dental care and many plans don't want to pay those costs.

Also, orthodontic work is often looked on by Dental Health Insurance companies as being "Cosmetic" in nature and thereby exempt from insurance because it is not a factor in determining the health of the individual. Orthodontic Dental Insurance is a separate insurance in itself.

Most supplemental Dental Health Insurance policies will require you to pay around $40 a month for this coverage. Depending on the plan, you can opt for a co pay, or a discount if you stay within a particular network of dentists.

Annual limits on dental insurance plans means that the insurance company will pay upto a certain amount per year and not more. Anything above that will have to come from your own pocket. The annual limits are usually in the $1500 range, though some plans (albeit with a higher premium) allow upto $3000 or more.

Choosing a Dental Health Insurance Plan

So many factors go into determining a plan that it becomes confusing trying to decide which one to take. Factors to consider are waiting periods for expensive operations, family coverage, and a clause know as LEAT standing for "Least Expensive Alternate Treatment" which means that insurance plans will only pay for the cheapest options among many.

Use this site, HealthQuotes.com, to compare various plans and find out which one suits you best. Research and patience are the most important factors which will determine whether or not you get a suitable Dental health insurance plan to suit your needs.
