While long-term care is generally associated with older adults, increasing numbers of younger adults need long-term care assistance due to traumatic injury, neurological disease, or loss of function due to disease. People requiring long-term care assistance need help with basic daily needs such as bathing, dressing, toileting, and eating or constant supervision due to cognitive impairment.

Medicare and other health insurance do not cover long-term care services. While they may pay for nursing home and home health care, they only cover care received to rehabilitate from an injury or illness. This care generally lasts for a few weeks or months. Long-term care needs are usually permanent and may last for years.

The need to understand all these factors can be intimidating. Colorado requires insurance companies to market two standardized benefit packages as a way to simplify the process and allow consumers to concentrate on choosing the right company and price. Consumers still will want to consider their own willingness to self-insure some of their care needs, their own sense of the right trade-off of policy cost versus comprehensiveness of coverage, and their individual purchase goals in deciding what policy is best for them.
