With the spiralling costs of health care, immigrants are realizing that it's too much of a risk to go without health insurance for even short periods as a single health care episode can wipe them out financially. Till just a short while ago, legal immigrants were disallowed by US federal law from accessing Medicaid or participating in the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) if they were residing in the US for less than 5 years. However, recently Obama modified the law removing this restriction and now all children - even those of immigrants less than five years - can avail of the low cost health care options.
