What Our Clients Say

"I taught school for many years and never really had to worry about insurance. I am now self-employed finding the right health insurance has been a big worry. I tried one insurance company but had to pay for everything up front, even office calls. I switched to BCBS and, though I have only used it one time, everything went very smoothly and I only had to pay the copay.  Thank you BCBS and Healthquotes!!"

Keeping your corporate health plan

Under the 1986 COBRA act, you are allowed to keep your current health insurance plan for a while (18 months) before you have to seek one out on your own. However, you may not want to continue the plan, given the fact that you will have to pay the full coverage price, instead of a small percentage that you paid as an employee. This can be prohibitively expensive. However, if you have advance warning, you can change your corporate plan before you quite (to make it cheaper) and then proceed while you are covered under the new plan.

Use the Health Savings Account (HSA)

If you enroll in what is called a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP), you can put tax deductible savings aside for health care costs. The HDHP plans allow you to pay a lower premium each month for heatlh care, but you will have to pay more out of pocket costs in case you need medical treatment. However, the tax deductible savings are supposed to compensate for this. For a person who is starting out as self employed, this can significantly reduce monthly expenditure.

Join in your spouse's insurance plan

If your spouse is working, you will be able to get insurance at a much lower rate than any of the options above. This is probably the simplest option for you, and one that is easily obtainable. If you're not married though, you're out of luck! If you have a chronic disease however, there is a possiblity that you might be denied insurance.

Grow your business and get group health insurance

If you find your business doing well, you can get group insurance coverage through an employers association. You will be able to provide this coverage for all employees including yourself.

The urgency of the matter - Performing research

Lots of self employed people do not get proper health insurance because of the high costs. Even after considering the suggestions above, you are likely to find that it simply costs too much to get reliable health insurance if you're self employed. Use this site to research various quotes that provide you with choices and spend the time necessary to get a plan that comes closest to what you want.
