nevada_health_insuranceLooking for an individual health insurance plan is not as easy as it sounds.  It is certainly not as simple as choosing from a small selection of employer-sponsored plans.  But finding Nevada health insurancedoesn’t have to be complicated.  There are plenty of little-known resources that will help you land the perfect plan for yourself and your family.

According to the website for the Nevada Division of Insurance, they are there to help you find an insurance company or agent that is licensed to help you find insurance in Nevada.  As the state regulatory agency responsible for all types of insurance sold in the state, you can be sure they will provide the most relevant and up-to-date contact information.  Located in Carson City and Las Vegas NV, the Nevada Department of Insurance will also help you file a complaint if an insurance company makes a false claim or is not living up to its promises.

If the insurance you currently have is through your employer, your plan will also be regulated by the United States Department of Labor department of Employee Benefits and Security Administration (EBSA).  This agency makes sure that your employer follows all the rules concerning their offer of insurance coverage to employees, including any discrimination against certain employees due to a pre-existing condition.  Additionally, if your company employs 20 or more people, the EBSA makes certain that all of your rights to COBRA are protected.

Anyone who is new to the world of individual Nevada health insurancemay be surprised to learn that insurers are permitted to turn down your application for coverage simply because of your current health status.  They can also charge a higher premium than their promotional rate, even if you have a family history of heart disease or are only slightly overweight.    However if you are considered “HIPAA eligible” then you could bypass this policy.

HIPAA eligibility may apply if you had a minimum of 18 months of creditable, uninterrupted coverage, ending with a group plan, and you have exhausted all of the available COBRA benefits for this plan.  People who fall into this category can usually buy Nevada health insurance through the Nevada Comprehensive Health Insurance Risk Pool Association.  Not sure if you are HIPAA eligible?  Contact the Nevada Division of Insurance and find out.
