Once you enter the world of individual health plans, it's easy to see why so many people get confused. There are co-pay plans; a choice of deductibles, coinsurance, and tax advantaged health savings accounts. With so many options, it is no wonder most people are left scratching their heads. While the various New Mexico health insurance plans may seem complicated, the good news is there are more choices than ever.

As a New Mexico health insurance broker, I am often asked to recommend an affordable plan for a healthy adult who wants to keep monthly premiums low. This may sound like a tall order, but after going through all the various plans I keep coming back to one that is offered by the Golden Rule Insurance Company.
They call this plan a QHDHP, or Qualified High Deductible Health Plan, which basically means it requires members to pay for healthcare out-of-pocket until a calendar year deductible is met. After that, 100% of covered services are paid. It also includes provisions for preventive care, such as an annual check-up with lab work and an annual OB/GYN visit, Pap smear and mammogram.
What's really nice about this plan is the health savings account (HSA) option. By contributing tax-free dollars to an HSA, members can pay for pre-deductible health expenses from an interest bearing savings account, but that's not all. They can also pay for other non-covered qualified medical expenses, which could include everything from contact lenses to health club memberships.
Marketed as the UnitedHealthOne HSA 100, this plan may seem similar to a lot of other HSA-qualified New Mexico health insurance plans. When you work with a broker who is familiar with New Mexico health insurance plans, you will learn a lot more about the details of the plan.
For example, the UnitedHealthOne HSA plans reduce your deductible for each year that you don't meet it. For example, if you start out with a $5,000 deductible and don't meet it the first year, you will have a $4,000 deductible the following year. If the same circumstances apply, it can be reduced again in the third year, to a maximum of 50% of than the original deductible limit.
